Felony Cases in Onondaga County Court

Onondaga County Court handles all felony criminal prosecutions within the county. The court is part of the 5th Judicial District, which also covers Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, and Oswego counties. The District Attorney's Office prosecutes felony cases after grand jury indictments. The DA works closely with the Syracuse Police Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office on investigations.

Felony cases begin with an arrest. If the case involves a crime that took place in Syracuse, the city police usually make the arrest. For crimes outside the city, the Sheriff's Office or local town police handle the arrest. After booking, the case goes to the District Attorney for review and possible grand jury presentation. If indicted, the case moves to County Court for arraignment, pretrial motions, and either trial or plea negotiations.

The court keeps detailed records at every stage. These include the arrest report filed with the court, the indictment, all pretrial motions, discovery disclosures under CPL Article 245, trial transcripts, jury instructions, verdict sheets, and sentencing documents. Records of grand jury proceedings are sealed under CPL Article 190 and are not available to the public.
